Joshua Harrelson, MSTCM, LAc
Joshua Harrelson has been practicing acupuncture in Sacramento since 2014. He specializes in Orthopedic Acupuncture, a style of acupuncture that blends conventional anatomy with the principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine. His patients benefit from the from the pain relief and expedited healing that are common with this strategy.
In addition to acupuncture, Joshua practices Restorative Therapy, a type of medical bodywork involving muscular release and structural realignment. This “hands-on” strategy can help restore normal function and reduce muscle pain. Restorative Therapy is appropriate for both acute injuries and chronic pain.
The majority of Joshua’s patients come in for pain disorders, both chronic and acute. Acute injuries from sports, running, or working out often respond quickly to care. Typically, patients who begin treatment soon after an injury will see the fastest results.
Chronic pain disorders in any body part, muscle, or joint can also be treated. A common example is low back pain with sciatica, which he treats nearly every day. Generally, a chronic pain condition will require a more lengthy treatment plan, but Joshua still expects his patients to experience periods of significant pain relief throughout the process.
Joshua likes to discuss the underlying mechanisms of their pain with his patients and provides practical self-care advice. He also uses herbal medicine when appropriate for patients to promote good circulation (for pain relief). He frequently uses topical applications of medicinal herbs in oils or patches, techniques such as cupping, and other therapies to help his patients feel better as quickly as possible.
He also teaches Restorative Therapy seminars annually. Joshua is a Shodan (black belt) in Japanese Jujitsu (known as Danzan Ryu) in Roseville, CA, where he practices and teaches.
Joshua completed his undergraduate studies at UC Davis with a B.S. in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology in 2010. He graduated from ACTCM with an M.S. in Traditional Chinese Medicine in 2013, where has also done Clinical Doctoral Training. He completed Restorative Therapy training in a variety of places but most notably at Makoto Kai Healing Arts, and Wasenshikan Martial and Healing Arts, in Danzan Ryu Restorative Therapy through the Seifukujitsu Institute.
Joshua Harrelson is licensed to practice acupuncture by the California Acupuncture Board. (Lic #16041)
